So up here in Edmonton its been around -30C (-22F for you Americans) the last couple days and is going to be about that cold till at least Thursday, thats not including windchill, with windchill it gets up to around -45C (-49F). So the roads were a mess to say the least, to give you an idea of whats going on up here due to the deep freeze:
Seen a couple bent lamp posts/Traffic light posts. Driving into work this morning all of a sudden I heard the sirens of a fire truck and ambulances and police cars and they were responding to a call as a car skidded thru an intersection and crashed into the traffic light pole >_< . I eventually got to the intersection and the accident didn't look too bad the car scraped on the passenger side, hopefully everyone was ok. I drove another few minutes and went through another intersection where I noticed another pretty bent traffic light post. This is actually somewhat common, at points in the winter you will notice numerous slightly bent light poles and in some cases missing light poles where they have been knocked clean off for the most part.
Anyways theres been traffic accidents galore around the city, water main bursts and fires, so the city has been not the most pleasant of places as of the last couple days. Even the sanding vehicles are breaking down and in some cases they can't even make it up the hills they are trying to sand. There was a really thick fog in downtown this morning, visibility was like 10 meters at points >_<. Numerous stalled cars, cars in ditches, lots of school buses aren’t running but the schools are still running, I think they said like 40% of the kids didn’t show up to school yesterday.
One rather strange sight yesterday was a photo radar vehicle on the way home. The road has a speed limit of 80km/h except for the fact with the icy roads I’d be surprised it there was anyone going above 60km/h. I dont even know why they were out there.
Anyways thats a peek of the deep freeze that seems to occur at least one week a year up here in Edmonton and basically its not the funnest week of the year ~_~. So to anyone else stuck in a deep freeze stay warm and stay safe.
damn that’s cold
i’m in Vancouver to the west of Alberta, and it was -4 here, and SFU was closed for 2 days. Too bad nothing happened to my school at UBC, damn
