When you don’t know… just shut up

There’s a proverb that says: Even the foolish when, when quiet, will be regarded as wise.  Or something of that sort.  Well apparently, some people didn’t learn the meaning of that.

I was walking around the Great Mall of the Bay Area last night, picking up an umbrella and some bread from Anderson’s bakery.  Well I walked by the Dave & Busters there.  For those of you that have seen the place, there’s an entrance on the outside and one inside of the mall.  Across from the D&B, inside the mall, is a Cingular store.  For some unknown reason that night, they closed the entrance to D&B from inside the mall.

As I walked by, I saw 2 firefighters outside of D&B trying to get the door open.  They started knocking on the door and things of that sort to get the employee’s attention.  Well this Cingular employee walks out from his store, and goes up to the firefighter.  He then yells out fairly loudly, “They won’t open the door.  It’s been closed all day.”  Then he gave the firefighters this smug look, as if he was helping them out or something.

Well I guess the firefighters didn’t like his attitude, so he replied, “Do you think that if a firefighter told them to open the door, they would disobey?”  The firefighters started to walk away, probably to enter the D&B from the other entrance.  The Cingular employee just stood there dumbfounded.

About half an hour later, I walked by the D&B again to go to my car.  The Cingular employee was hiding behind his desk, looking up something on his computer.  The D&B was now open for entrance from inside the mall.  And I had a big laugh at the expense of that Cingular employee.

Ahhh… Now I just need to remember to keep my mouth shut more often.

“it’s better to keep quiet and look like a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
